Happy Monday (Australian time), QAV America.
And welcome to all of our new members.
My weekend involved 4.5 hours of kung fu on Saturday, and I started reading “Pale Fire” by Nabokov. Really enjoying it so far. Been struggling to find a novel I can really get into lately. Tried and discarded a few that didn’t grab me. I no longer have much tolerance for slow starts apparently. Must be an age thing. Went out to lunch with Chrissy yesterday, leaving Fox at home by himself for the first time! FREEDOM! As I write this, I’m listening to “END OF WORLD”, a 2023 album by PIL that I just discovered existed. Loving it. Didn’t even know they were still around, now I find out they are coming to Brisbane in January next year. Might have to go to that.
Market This Week (S&P 500)
The S&P 500 posted its third straight weekly gain, closing Friday at 7,785.76:
- The index hit a fresh all-time high during Thursday’s session, topping 7,800 for the first time on an intraday basis, with a record closing high of 7,798.99.
- Stocks were lifted mid-week after the latest inflation report matched expectations, easing concerns about imminent Federal Reserve rate increases. After the CPI and a mixed PPI, market-implied odds of a Fed rate hike next month eased.
- Retail sales fell a surprising 0.6% in July, with analysts having expected a 0.2% rise following June’s 0.2% increase. Consumer sentiment also soured, with the University of Michigan index dropping to 51.0 in August from 55.2 in July.
- Sector momentum for the week was led by energy, with the sector up nearly 6% through Thursday’s close. Oil prices surged on Iran tensions, with WTI crude rising to around $82 per barrel and Brent to around $87 per barrel.
- With 455 of 500 S&P 500 firms having reported, 87% beat analyst EPS estimates and 68% exceeded revenue estimates, with full second-quarter earnings growth expected at around 50% year-on-year.
All the best,
Cameron

And here’s my TikTok of the week.
@qavinvesting In Germany, large companies BY LAW need to have a supervisory board made up of 50% employees who get to vote on the membership of the ACTUAL Board that runs the company. It was set up by the Allies after WWII to stop the return of fascism. Why don't we have something similar in the United States and Australia? investing management fascism corruption trump management

FOR NEW MEMBERS
If you’re new to QAV Light, here’s a quick reminder on how it works.
- We send you an email every Monday advising which stocks we are adding to our Light portfolio.
- You can copy our trades, but please remember to review our Trading Guidelines to understand which cap you should be looking at and other important considerations. And consult a financial planner before making any decisions.
- We don’t recommend that you add stocks which are already in our portfolio. Their position on our buy list might have changed since we recommended them. Just start with the stocks recommended after you become a member.
- If one of the stocks we add breaches one of our sell conditions, we will sell it from our portfolio and you’ll get an email advising of the trade. Again, you can copy our trades, but seek financial advice before making any decisions. And please check your Rule #1 price (see Trading Guidelines).
- If you come across any QAV terminology that you don’t understand (eg Rule 1, 3PTL, Possibles, etc), please review our terminology guide or just email us for clarification.
That’s it for today!
If we decide to buy or sell something, we’ll let you know.
